The Different Approach Of The Nintendo Wii

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

When Nintendo released their Wii console back in 2006, it represented a major change for the gaming industry. Even although this is a sector which is used to rapid change, the release of the Nintendo Wii was still a major deviation from the norm. Instead of introducing a more powerful, faster console, with upgraded graphics, the Wii introduced a completely new technique for playing games thanks to its innovative control system.

The Wii uses a hand held, motion sensitive, wireless controller which has the ability to detect motion and acceleration in all directions. Rather than using a traditional joystick or D-pad, gamers swing, point and gesture using the remote control – known as the Wii-mote. The result is a game interaction which is very intuitive and simply cannot be found on the other consoles.

It’s very easy to quickly learn how to play games on the Wii. In the end, if you don’t know what to do, just flail your arms around a little bit more energetically and see what happens. That may well be one of the reasons why the Wii appeals to a much broader age group than some other consoles.

Playing Wii games definitely requires much more movement than most computer games. The Wii comes with the “Wii Sports” game – and now “Wii Sports Resort” – which is a fantastic method of demonstrating how innovative the Wii control system is. Wii Sports has five different games – boxing, tennis, golf, baseball and boxing. These are perfect for demonstrating, by means of the natural movements required in each sport, how to use the Wii controller in the best manner. The Wii Sports Resort includes 12 further sports based games, such as table tennis, canoeing and sword fighting – all of which use the Wii’s motion sensitive controllers to maximum effect.

The games that ship with the Wii are really very good. They should keep you entertained for a long time – and they’re the sort of games that you don’t “finish”. As long as you have a couple of family members or friends who want a game of tennis or golf you can keep going back to Wii Sports again and again – and you probably will.

However, there is an enormous selection of games available for you to buy for the Wii. Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog are always very popular and Wii Fit has proven to be an enormous success for Nintendo. The option of exercising in your own living room, without having to buy any expensive special equipment, is a big bonus for many people. Apart from your Wii console, all you will need is the Wii Fit software and the Wii Fit balance board – which are a fraction of the cost of a gym membership. The Wii also acts as your personal computerised trainer, tracking and recording your progress.

As a result of the Wii’s appeal across a wide age group, you will often find it in the living room of family homes rather than tucked away in a teenager’s bedroom. It does appear to be a more sociable console than the others - a lot of the games are best enjoyed in groups or teams, although you can play against the computer if you wish. That may be one of the reasons why the recently released black Wii has proven to be such a great success for Nintendo. It may be due to the fact that the black colour is a better match for the other devices normally found in the average family living room.

PS2 Systems - The Must Have Accessories

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The PS2 was released in 2000, and has gone on to sell more than 70 million unites. It has competed against many other well known gaming consoles, yet still remains one of the best selling gaming machines of all time. The reasons for its success are partly because it is competitively priced, partly because of the great games available for it, and partly because of the many game enhancing accessories which can be used with it.

Of the accessories available for the PS2 console, these are the most popular…

Sony PS2 Multitap : Unlike the Xbox or GameCube, the PS2 only has two built in controller ports. However, by buying this PS2 accessory you can engage in a four player gaming session.

PS2 Dual Shock Controller : This controller provides a more spontaneous gaming experience, with pressure sensitivity on every action button plus an improved mobility of the analog. After using one, you will find it slightly boring to use the standard PS2 controller again.

PS2 DVD Remote Controller Kit : The PS2 is perfect for watching moves as well as playing games; but it does not come with a remote control, which means that playing, pausing or fast forwarding movies is a bit of a pain. This controller is basically for those people who hate having multiple remotes messing up their rooms. It can be used for both gaming and watching movies.

Sony PS2 Memory Card : Obviously you would always want to continue your game from where you would have left off. Sonys memory cards are the safest and trustworthy way to ensure that your game files does not get corrupted or lost.

Logitech PS2 Wireless Headset : This allows you to play games without getting tangled up in wires or waking up your family with loud game sounds. It will also help you to communicate with other online players. The Logitech Wireless headset is well built, with excellent sound quality.

Nintendo’s Black Wii Is A Popular Choice With Consumers

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

It’s probably reasonable to suggest that all of the big three games consoles – Sony’s PS3, the Microsoft Xbox and the Nintendo Wii – all have their own strong points. Individual gamers will have their own personal favourites and it’s a futile exercise to try to convince them that one of the other consoles is better, or even equally good.

A lot of households today will have more than one, and very possibly all three, games consoles. Not to mention the various mobile consoles like the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS. It’s quite common these days for games consoles to also see use as blu-ray disc or DVD players.

Regardless of which console is “best”, it’s probably fair to say that the Nintendo Wii is the most sociable of the three consoles. Microsoft’s Xbox and the Sony PS3 will often be found in teenager’s bedrooms - the Wii, on the other hand, is quite often found in the family living room. The Wii has less processing power than the other two consoles and has much simpler graphics – more cartoon like in general. Yet it is the Wii that is often found connected to the big screen TV in the living room.

Part of the reason for this is the fact that the Wii’s motion sensitive controller means that, even though the graphics are simpler, it’s harder to follow the action on a small screen TV when you’re jumping around like a lunatic. The other thing is that it’s easier and more intuitive to learn games on the Wii. It’s so easy that even adults can manage it – so it’s a lot easier for all the family members to take part in the fun.

One of the consequences of all that jumping about when playing Wii games is that more space is required to play the Wii than the other consoles. This also makes the living room a more attractive choice than the typical teenage bedroom, where you would be tripping over discarded clothes, half eaten pizzas and empty juice bottles. The physical side of playing games on the Wii is a good thing. It means that there’s a certain amount of exercise involved when playing Wii games. Mind you, you should be careful and take it easy at first. It’s very easy to wake up with a stiff arm or sore legs after your first evening of playing Wii Sports.

The tendency for families to have their Wii console in the living room could go some way to explaining the success of the black Wii. Nintendo went to the dark side and released a black Wii console in Japan in the summer of 2009. It was released in Europe just before Christmas 2009. It proved to be a very popular choice with many gamers – probably because it matches the TV, the DVD player, the cable box etc. – better than the white version.

Wii Games - So Easy Even Adults Can Play Them

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Video games as a hobby are usually played in teenage bedrooms. You buy them a games console when they’re ten and then they disappear for hours at a time, emerging infrequently to load up on snacks and fizzy drinks.

However, the release of the Nintendo Wii console changed all that. It soon became apparent that Nintendo’s Wii was a console more suited to the living room than the bedroom. There are a number of reasons for this.

First of all, the Wii’s motion sensitive controller (the wii-mote) meant that the manner in which games were played was much more intuitive. Games were considerably easier to learn, no need to remember that button X is to run, button Y is to punch and button Z executes a back-flip. In fact, Wii games are so easy to play that even adults can learn them in a matter of minutes.

Also, due to the physical aspects of Wii games, there’s some exercise involved. Not only the famous Wii Fit – but almost all Wii games require some degree of jumping around, much more so than the typical games found on other consoles. That needs a bit of elbow room.

For some reason, which is difficult to quantify precisely, Wii games and the Wii console seem to have a more social element than has been seen up to now with other PC or console games. As with other consoles, you can play against the computer should you wish, but Wii games tend to be a lot more fun when played as part of a group.

Maybe it’s the fact that you have to dance around, wave your arms about and generally make yourself look a bit silly at times. Whatever the reason, the Wii is undoubtedly a group activity.

Even if it is a bit of a hackneyed expression, the Wii really is fun for children of all ages. Wii games can be a social event, they can help you to exercise and lose weight and they are a lot of fun. The key thing is that the Wii has taken video games out of teenager’s bedrooms and placed them right in the middle of the family living room.

In fact, this could go some way to explaining the success when Nintendo recently “went to the dark side” and released a black Wii console in Europe just before Christmas. It proved to be very popular with customers – possibly because the black colour matched the other devices in their living rooms. As yet, the black Nintendo Wii console has not been launched in America.
